Brinton Deighton

Brinton Stanley Deighton died on April 4, 2026, at age 92. He was born on January 22, 1934, to Hilda and Stanley Deighton, and grew up in West Orange, NJ. He earned a degree in chemical engineering—as valedictorian—from Cornell University in 1958, and a master’s degree from California Institute of Technology in 1959. Brint met his wife, Carolyn Frances Bailey, at Cornell in 1958; they were married in 1960. Brint spent the first six years of his career with Chevron (San Francisco Bay Area) designing refineries; he then transitioned to Chevron’s international business—including seven years on assignment to Aramco in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia—which provided Brint and Carolyn with many foreign travel opportunities. Brint retired from Chevron/Aramco in 1994 and returned to Moraga, California; in 1999, he and Carolyn moved to Fort Collins to be closer to some family. Brint enjoyed many outdoor activities. Beginning in the 1970s, he shared ownership of successive sailing sloops in San Franciso Bay; in the 1980s, he scuba-dived in Bonaire and the Red Sea and learned to wind surf. Brint also enjoyed camping and canoeing, which led to his involvement with the Boy Scouts. He was Scoutmaster of the BSA troop in Dhahran. In his early retirement, he was Assistant Scoutmaster of a troop in Moraga, where he led canoe trips down the Green River (Utah), and a 200-mile trip on the Yukon River. Brint and Carolyn joined Newcomers when they moved to Fort Collins, through which they developed many warm friendships. Within Newcomers, Brint became organizer of a men’s book group, a men’s breakfast group, and a Food Bank volunteer group. For several years, Brint enjoyed skiing with a Newcomers group, and also with family in Breckenridge, until weak knees dictated a halt. In 2001, he had his final canoeing adventure (with four Newcomers), a 100 mile trip on the upper Missouri River while reading the Lewis and Clark journals. In later years, Brint had time to reflect on his enjoyable early years, the many unexpected twists and turns, and the one inevitable end. Even with reduced physical ability, he was still able to enjoy the road of life. As written by Ninth Century Japanese poet Ariwara no Narihara, “Long ago I heard that this is the road we must all travel in the end, but I never thought it might be yesterday or today.” Brint is survived by his wife Carolyn, their three children, five grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild. The family will arrange a celebration of life at a later date.
