Betty Jean Sorency

May 8, 1937 - March 11, 2022

Betty Jean Sorency, 84, of Fort Collins, Colorado, passed away on March 11, 2022. Betty was born to Fred and Martha (Hoyt) Virden on May 8, 1937. Born and raised in Denver, Betty was very proud to have attended North High School and went to reunions for many years. She met Richard “Dick” Sorency at a church function, and they were married on June 17, 1956. Their three children were also born in Denver and raised in Arvada, after which Betty and Dick lived in Peoria, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada prior to moving to Fort Collins in 2002. Betty loved to cook and showed her love through food. She spent many years working for the Jefferson County school district as a cook. Her family and friends will definitely miss their favorites – her spaghetti, fried chicken, brownies, and Santa Claus-shaped cookies. She also had an artistic side. She loved to dance and as a child, was a professional tap dancer. She enjoyed playing piano, singing, working with ceramics and creating crafts. She loved the outdoors of Colorado, including spending summers at the family cabin in Bailey, Colorado. Betty was a homemaker and a fun, supportive mother to her children throughout their lives. She was the number one fan for everyone in her life, always there to cheer people on – at every dance recital, ball game, and performance. She was a natural at making people feel special and welcome and celebrated every holiday with those closest to her. Betty was a spirited, spicy woman who was not afraid to speak her mind when necessary. Betty is survived by her three children, Debra (Ray) Gillan of Fort Collins, Mark (Jan) Sorency of Lakewood, CO and Greg (Priscilla) Sorency of Colorado Springs, CO; her grandchildren Cole, Chris, Taylor, Riley, Sandra, Nicole, Tamara, Joseph, and Bonnie; and her great-grandchildren Bliss, Hazel, Juniper, Aiden, Jordan, Madden, Jersey, Cannon, Ryan, Dylan, Kennedy, Crew, and Eleanor. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Dick. She will be laid to rest next to him at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado, at 2:30 pm, Friday, April 1, 2022. A Memorial Mass in honor of Betty will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 19, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Collins. A luncheon will follow the Mass. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Betty’s honor to the Larimer County Humane Society.
