Sharon Kay Metcalf

January 21, 2021 - January 21, 2021

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven; A time to be born and a time to die;...” (Ecclesiastes 3 KJV) The time for Sharon Kay Metcalf was January 21, 2021, 1:20am. Kay was born May 13 ,1942 to Henry and Lurena Bolton Metcalf in Lyons, Kansas. She enjoyed growing up on the family farm North of Lyons. Kay attended Fairplay School, was a member of the Fairplay 4-H Club in Lyons, KS, Mrs. Gudgel’s Accordion Band, Rainbow Girls, Beta Sigma Phi, and the Christian Church. One of her 4-H projects was showing lambs; she also taught the lambs to butt. After a few unfortunate incidents, her parents convinced her that was probably not a productive use of her time, although to her it was fun. After graduating from Lyons High School, Kay attended Radiological Technician training at the Hutchinson Hospital. When her training was completed, she traveled to San Diego, California to pursue her career. One year was enough fun in the sun and she returned to Kansas. She settled in the Kansas City area. Until her retirement in 2004, Kay was employed as a radiological technician for the Western Missouri Radiological Group, Inc. After her retirement, Kay traveled, volunteered at a local animal shelter, and enjoyed her time at home. She moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 2019. The thing she most enjoyed was visiting with people she met as she traveled through life. She could and would talk with anyone at any place or time, a wonderful ability. Kay made many new friends at her new home. Kay is survived by her sister, Sondra Sue Metcalf, of Fort Collins, Colorado and her nephew, James Henry Thurman, of North Pole, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lurena Metcalf, her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Ann and Michael Thurman, her nephew Jeffrey Shawn Thurman, and favorite aunts and uncles. Kay always wanted to “help the animals.” Memorial contributions can be made to a local animal care facility in your area or a charity of your choice. A “spring in Kansas” service is being planned for the burial of her remains.
