Ada Mosby Cushing

Feb 28, 1926 — Jul 28, 2013

Ada Mosby Cushing died suddenly July 28, 2013 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Ada was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Wytheville, Virginia, on February 28, 1926 to Margaret Pendleton Mosby and Thomas Talford Mosby II. She was raised in Baltimore, Maryland by her aunt and uncle.

During the 1940's, Ada was a successful fashion model in New York City, but soon realized she much preferred being behind the camera. Ada married her first husband, Frances Harding Davies in 1945. Together with their young son, John Harding Davies, they moved to Washington, D.C. where Frances practiced law. After her marriage to Davies ended, Ada married Steven Cushing, an earnest young journalist mentored by Edward R. Morrow, who went on to anchor the news desk for CBS Evening News. During Ada's 'Georgetown Days', she was well known for her warm and generous spirit, playful nature and little black T-Bird convertible. Everyone from dignitaries, politicians and Hollywood entertainers, to poor relatives and old friends, have all been graciously hosted by Ada. Ada lived in Sarasota, Florida and Frederiksted, Saint Croix for many years before following her heart back to NYC's Greenwich Village.

Over the years, Ada worked at many publications, contributing witty articles, editing columns and critiquing fashion trends. Just as she lived her life with elegance and grace, her passing was gentle and swift. As she began her new journey, she was especially pleased she hadn't put off that mani/pedi last week! Miss Ada loved a tall gin & tonic (only Schweppes!), cigarettes (Saratogas) and the NYTIMES crossword puzzle (always in ink!). We will miss her unique spirit, her impeccable style and those magnificent memories of her colorful life.

Ada was preceded in death by her husbands, Frances and Steve; her beloved son, John; her brother, Thomas Mosby and her sister, Margaret Mosby Tolkach. Ada is survived by her sister, Barbara Mosby Charmoz of Paris, France; nephew Jacques Charmoz and family of Paris France; nephew Remy Charmoz and family of Fairfield, Connecticut; niece Frederique Charmoz of Paris, France; niece Anne Lutton and family of Fort Collins, Colorado; niece Joy Mosby Clay and family of Santa Cruz, California; nephew Thomas Mosby and family of Lakeville, Minnesota and niece, Katherine Mosby, of New York City, New York.

A celebration of Ada's wonderful life will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at 2:00 pm at the Lutton residence, 705 Parkview Drive, Fort Collins, Colorado. The family suggests donations be made in her name to the Fort Collins Cat Rescue, Fort Collins, Colorado or The Church of St. Luke of the Field, New York City, New York.
