Our lovely and extraordinary mother Barbara Ann Garey died peacefully March 31st, 2022, at home in Fort Collins, CO.
She was born August 8, 1928 in Sedan, Kansas to William Lyman Hunt and Margaret (Casement) Hunt. She graduated high school in Stafford, Kansas in 1946 and St. Mary's School of Nursing in Winfield, Kansas as a registered nurse in 1949. On June 8, 1950 she married Marshall William Garey, Jr. in Stafford, Kansas. They moved to southern California where they started a family. She worked as an emergency room nurse and chief nurse administrator for a private medical practice. She and her husband returned to Stafford in 1977 where she made many close friends and was well regarded in the community. She was actively employed as a registered nurse serving in many roles at Stafford County Hospital until her retirement in 1995.
Her accomplishments include implementing a patient care program for rural hospitals funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. A longtime member of the Methodist Church Chapter BK, she sang in the choir and supported many church activities. She was an active member of EB P.E.O and many other community organizations. An avid sports fan, she loved the University of Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas City Chiefs. From a young age, she loved to play the cello and the piano performing at many community events. She moved to Fort Collins in 2013 and joined EB P.E.O Chapter and helped her P.E.O sisters raise funds for scholarships.
She is survived by daughters Marsha Atkinson of Sacramento, CA, and Sarah Behunek and husband Jan of Fort Collins, CO, grandson William Atkinson of San Mateo, CA, as well as her beloved grand kitties. She is preceded in death by her spouse, her parents, and her two children, William Patrick Garey and Karen Jane Garey. A memorial service will be held later in Kansas.
