Cecil "Smitty" Smith, age 77 of Fort Collins, Colorado died November 19, 2009 at the Pathways Hospice Care Center in Loveland. A gathering in celebration of his life will be held December 5th from 2-4 PM at the American Legion Hall. Cecil was born January 17, 1932 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Ernest and Mary Smith. In 1949 his family moved to Fort Collins. His favorite pastime was drag racing throughout Colorado. And he had to be a crack auto mechanic to do so. Over the years, Smitty worked for Ed's Service Center on South College Ave. and later as a mechanic and form setter for Kiefer Concrete. He also worked at several other service stations, but those jobs were his way to get back to the drag racing he so loved. Throughout the 1950's, 60's and 70's, when he was very active, he was well known and appreciated for his mechanical skills all around town. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Shirley (Jones) Smith; two sons, Kevin and Greg; brothers and sisters, Ernest and Judy Smith of Springfield, MO, Teresa and Norman Shaw of Ronan, MT, Jerry and Barbara Smith of LaPorte, CO, Roxy and Art Pitner of Windsor, CO, Phil and Barbara Smith of Severance, CO, Dan and Leann Smith andBecky and Ken Baker of Fort Collins and Judy and Lonnie Niesent of Loveland, CO; and his step-mother, Lela Smith of Windsor. His family requests that any memorial donations please be made to Shirley Smith to help with funeral expenses. God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you And whispered "Come with Me". With tearful eyes we watched you Suffer and fall away. Although we couldn't bear to lose you We could not ask you to stay. A golden heart stopped beating Hardworking hands were laid to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us That he only takes the best.
