Cheung Ta "David" Auyeung

d. Sep 19, 2024

Rev. David Auyeung (欧阳昌大) passed away suddenly but peacefully on September 19, 2024, in Fort Collins, Colorado. Born on June 19, 1945, in Chongqing, China, he devoted his life to ministry and service. David and his wife Chin-In Chu (朱琴音, Aliza Auyeung) were married for 41 years.

David's early childhood was marked with many transitions as the family uprooted to flee military and political upheaval. At age 7, David, along with his family, accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in Hong Kong. They moved to Malaysia, following a vision of his mother to spread the Gospel. David began his formal education at Nanyang University in Singapore, earning a Bachelors of Arts with honors in history. He continued his studies in library science at Aberystwyth University, Wales before returning to Singapore to continue as a librarian at the National Library. In 1983, he married Chin-In who he had known since 1966, in Bukit Timah, Singapore. A year later, the two moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan for David to begin his studies at Calvin Theological Seminary. He graduated with an M. Div in 1988 and the couple moved three years later to Lawrence, Kansas for Chin-In to study music composition. Their son Sam was born in 1994 and in 1995, they moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where David pastored the Fort Collins Chinese Evangelical Free Church until 2016.

Despite the many challenges of life, David was always generous, wanting to give his best to others. Though he lost his left arm at the age of 5, he never let this hinder him and he enjoyed cooking for people, giving driving lessons, as well as giving haircuts to himself and others. However, he preferred to wear laceless shoes.

David will be remembered as a man of deep faith and quiet humility. His congregation will also remember he often went over time with his sermons. But David cared deeply for his congregation, immersed himself in the study of Scripture, and above all, loved the Lord he served with all his heart, mind, and soul.

"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known."

David is survived by his wife Chin-In, his son Sam Auyeung, his nieces Grace, Seraphim, Cherubim, and grand-niece Vianne. He is also survived by sister-in-law Lam Chui Thim, brothers-in-law Chu Sin I, Chu Sin Jan (Oiki), Chu Sin Chien (Chun Kiang), nephews Chu Wei Xin (Daphne Ong), Chu Wei Ping, and grand-nieces Elyse and Emmie. He was predeceased by his parents, 歐陽維一 and 俞惠慈, and his siblings Peace, Daniel, and Esther.

The memorial service will be held Saturday, 19 October at 3 pm at Peace With Christ Lutheran Church (1412 W Swallow Rd, Fort Collins, CO 80526), followed by dinner at 6 pm at Fort Collins Chinese Evangelical Free Church (2140 Valley Forge Ave, Fort Collins, CO 80526).
