Daniel P. Tobin, (CDR USN Ret.), age 86 of Fort Collins, CO, died peacefully November 1, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. He is survived by Marie Elizabeth (Betty) Tobin, his loving wife of 60 years as well as his six devoted children and ten grandchildren: Stephen (and Laurie) Tobin and their children Marleah and Collin of Longmont, David (and Anne) and their children, Molly and Kathryn of Boulder, Judith (and Stephen) Bartels and their children Ashley and Robert of Pittsford, New York, Kathleen (and Douglas) Udy and their children Daniel, Kevin, Elizabeth and Laura of Fort Collins, Michael Tobin (and Michael Atkins) of Denver and Mary (and Ernie) Batson of Fort Collins. He is also survived by his brother Paul (and Lynn) Tobin of Lakeland, Florida. Dan is predeceased by his parents, Daniel P. Tobin and Anna Marie Tobin; his brother Charles Tobin and sister Anne Buckles. Dan was born August 10, 1923 in Newport, Rhode Island to Daniel and Anna Marie Tobin. He grew up in Newport, attended Teachers College until joining the U.S. Navy in December of 1942. On June 18, 1949, Dan married Marie Elizabeth (Betty) Schmelz and began their family of six children. After serving during WWII, Korea and Viet Nam as a Naval Aviator, Dan was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon in Washington D.C.. He retired as a Commander after 26 years of service, settling his family in Rockville, Maryland, where Betty and Dan lived for 38 years. There they attended to St. Jude's Catholic Parish and were well loved by all. In 2005 he and Betty relocated to Fort Collins, Colorado to be with their children and families. There, Dan and Betty became beloved and active parishioners of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Dan also served many years as a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 AM Thursday preceded by a viewing at 10 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 5450 South Lemay Ave., Ft. Collins. Interment, with full military honors will be held Friday at 2:15 at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver The family requests that any memorial donations please be made to Pathways Hospice of Larimer County.
