Darlene Sandra Skaggs Burns passed away on July 8, 2024, in Loveland, Colorado, at the age of 95. Born on November 17, 1928, in El Dorado, Kansas, Darlene's life was marked by a profound kindness and a vibrant passion for the arts.
Darlene's early education took place at St. Anthony Catholic School in Wichita, Kansas, followed by El Dorado High School. She furthered her studies at El Dorado Junior College. Her career as a singer and entertainer was a testament to her lifelong love for music and her exceptional talent in connecting with people through her performances. Other than performing, Darlene had embarked on a variety of positions, also in the realm of the entertainment industry. During her residency in Las Vegas Nevada, she had secured employment as a personal secretary, P.R. and promotional manager for such notables as Louis Prima and Bill Dana. A major highlight in her singing career was having Mel Torme accompanying her on piano during an impromptu and spontaneous session in a San Francisco hotel lounge. Upon finishing a classic standard song, Mr. Torme complimented Darlene by exclaiming, "you sing!!" Darlene graced every stage upon which she had performed with her distinctly unique and melodic voice, from Wichita KAKE TV's 1950s afternoon show "Party Line," and many Wichita night clubs and ballrooms, to very prominent Las Vegas venues including, the Sands, Stardust and Flamingo hotels, just to name a few.
Beyond her professional life, Darlene was a person of deep spiritual conviction, which she expressed through her music and creative writing. Known for her eloquent use of language, Darlene was not only a songwriter and poet but also a wise and generous soul, always ready to offer a kind word or a lesson gleaned from her rich life experiences.
Darlene's legacy is carried on by her loving family, including her son, Howard Dean Skaggs III; brother, Mike Burns; nephews, Mark and John Burns; and cousins, Richard and Vance Burch. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline (Burch) Ury and Michael Burns.
