Del was forever grateful for his early life in the 1950's in a West Virginia coal mining town. He & his two brothers were raised by their loving parents Marvel & Russell Haney. They were rich in the values of faith, a strong work ethic & discipline—pulling together to provide for the family & serve the community & their church. Del had precious memories & stories galore about the inventive games, adventure & antics that he & his brothers got into!
He was a good student & headed off to college but took a detour enlisting in the US Army & completing a tour of duty in Viet Nam. He matured & gained much clarity about core principles of life & of serving a purpose greater than yourself. His life goals also came into focus. Upon return he hit the ground running at Ohio State University & cultivated his strengths in accounting, finance & computer science. These were the source of much success over the years in his roles in investment & finance.
Praise God he met Ginger in the school of business! They fell in love & became one another's date-for-life—best buddies. They launched their marriage & careers in Los Angeles & enjoyed professional success, travel & many adventures. Two peas in a pod, they grew & supported one another in every way for over 51 years. After early retirement they jointly turned their time & energy to their Catholic Faith which they cherished & became active in Church ministries for many years. Del was also committed & "all-in" with Ginger in providing caregiving for family members over many years. He loved his entire family very much.
Throughout it all, Del's core desire was to be productive & help others—to encourage & walk alongside those around him. He was excellent in what he did & shunned the spotlight. A natural coach, he loved helping others cultivate their talents. Del was a quiet, attentive listener—with a keen sense of observation. Humility & gratitude were his hallmarks. He also had a knack for catching people off guard with his great sense of humor.
Alzheimer's Disease at age 68 changed so much… but he handled it with grace & much gratitude for all who helped him. His desire was always to make things easier for them if he could. He & Ginger are eternally grateful for the prayerful support of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish…the life changing support of our Dementia Together family… & for our extraordinary caregiving & hospice teams who allowed Del to finish his journey at home. And now he is free & we are forever changed because of him.
