Donald Young

Donald "Don" Eugene Young, age 88, of Fort Collins died August 20, 2010 at a local care facility. It was Don's desire to be cremated and no services are planned. His remains will be interred at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Rockford, Illinois. Don was born on September 2, 1921 to John and Carmella Young in Oelwein, Iowa. He moved to Rockford while quite young, grew up there and graduated from Winnebago High School in 1939. Don enlisted in the US Army and was part of the D-Day invasion in Europe. Don met Alma Acheson in England during his military service in World War II. They were married on June 9, 1944 in Nottingham Forest, England. After the war, they returned to the United States and made their home in Rockford where Don was a carpenter and built homes and apartments in the area. Alma and Don moved to Fort Collins two years ago, in 2008, to be near his son, John and family. They also resided in Santa Barbara, California for two years. Don was a "Big Jokester" and an avid lawn bowler. He built greens and took care of these lawns at the Rockford Lawn Bowling Club for many years. Don is survived by his wife Alma; his son, John and wife Vita of Fort Collins; his daughter, Joan Justice and husband Cecil of Loves Park, Illinois; four grand-children Jackie and husband Mike Hutchison, Cecilia and husband Mark Fowler, John J. Young and Jill and husband Mike Dryfhout; and five great grand-children Xavier, Justice, Zachary, Kyle and Kate. He was preceded in death by his five siblings.
