Earl L. Carlyon passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 27, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86 years old. Earl grew up in Alexandria, LA., one of seven siblings, the son of Walter and Irma Carlyon. He later went on to serve in the U.S. Navy. Following his honorable discharge, he received his bachelor's degree from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute and a master's degree in science from Cornell University.
After an early career in business, Earl worked for nearly three decades as an educator, ending his career in Connecticut. There, he served in the CT State Department of Education in various capacities. He was the founding president of the CT Association of Physics Teachers, the CT State Co-Chair of Operation Physics, and the Field Director for CT Common Core of Learning in Physics. During his career, he presented nearly 100 science workshops. Such was his recognition as a master teacher, in 1992 he received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The highpoint of his career, however, occurred in 2000, when he was asked by the Dalai Lama's emissary, Achok Rimpoche, to introduce western science to Tibetan Buddhist monks in southern India. Earl is survived by his devoted wife Martha of 50 years; his three daughters, Regina Carlyon of New York, Jeanne Blythe of Texas, and Carla Carlyon of Long Island, N.Y.; and, his two sons, Jonathan Carlyon of Colorado and Matthew Carlyon of Amherst, Massachusetts; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Earl also leaves behind his three sisters, with numerous nieces and nephews. His was a life well lived.
