Edward C. Clarkin

Edward Clarkin (Ed), 84, of Windsor, formerly of Fort Collins, passed away Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Pathways Hospice Care Center at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, after a brief illness. Ed was born to Thomas and Erna Clarkin on December 2, 1934 in Lake City, Iowa. He was the eldest of three children. Ed grew up in Lake City area. Ed was an amazing athlete in high school. He played football and ran track, and holds the record for 4x440 relay at his high school. While in high school he was a member of the track team and they won the indoor and outdoor state champions all four years that he was there. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1954. Ed and his wife Mary Hanks, "the girl next door", were united in marriage on August 23, 1959. In 1961, they moved to Fort Collins and started their family. They had three children, Suzanne, Bill and Dean.

Ed started working at a very young age helping his uncle deliver milk. He was an extremely hard worker and was never afraid of work. Ed worked in the auto parts industry until 1978. At that time he started his second career in the mining industry. Ed worked for Sterling Companies, Western Mobile and LaFarge as a supervisor of a rock crushing crew. He spent a lot of time away from home working in the mountains. His favorite place to spend time was Glenwood Springs where he spent several years working during the week and coming home on the weekends. Ed retired in 2000 from LaFarge. He did not stay retired for too long before he began working for Hersh Trucking as their inventory clerk. He stopped working there a few years ago but still went there daily to hang out with his buddies at the "round table" solving the world's problems. His buddies were very important to him.

Ed taught his children a good work ethic, loyalty and to be good people. Ed was very proud of his family and would get a big smile on his face and sometimes a tear in his eye when he talked about them. Like his wife Mary, his biggest joy was his five grandchildren, Eric, Natalie, Tommy, Ryan and Shane.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Suzanne (Marty) Hansen of Cedar Park, Texas, son, Bill (Patty) Clarkin of Fort Collins, son, Dean (Christa) Clarkin of Wellington, and his five grandchildren, Eric (Sarah) Hansen, Natalie Hansen, Tommy Clarkin, Ryan Clarkin and Shane Clarkin. Great grandson, LG Matthews IV. He is also survived by sisters, Carol (Harlan) Condon of Tabor, Iowa and Marvel (Bob) Richards of Pasadena, California and his nieces. Ed is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, his parents Thomas and Erna Clarkin, A celebration of life open house will be Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 202 E Vine St, Fort Collins from 1pm - 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed's name to Pathways Hospice of Larimer County, 305 Carpenter Road, Fort Collins, CO 80525.
