Flo Butler

Marjorie Flo Butler, 91, of Fort Collins, Colorado, died June 19, 2022. She was born April 21, 1931, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Thomas and Mary Haxel Brown. She graduated from high school in Tulsa, received Bachelor's Degrees in English and Education in Oklahoma, and a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Denver. She married Harold S. Butler on June 20, 1954, in Tulsa, and they celebrated 56 years of marriage before his death in 2010.

Flo was a schoolteacher in the 1950s in Boulder, CO, and Manhattan, KS. Thereafter, she and her husband lived in Palo Alto, California, where he was a graduate student at Stanford University. Their daughter, Nanette, was born during this time. The family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico in 1963, where they lived until retirement, except for three year-long stays in France and Switzerland in conjunction with her husband's employment at CERN Laboratories in Geneva. They retired to Fort Collins in 1993.

In Los Alamos, Flo was a science/engineering librarian and editor. Her greatest love was classical music, and she was a constant concert goer. She was also a dedicated traveler, visiting 25 countries and all but three of the 50 states. An avid reader, she enjoyed literature, history, and the study of French culture—its music, art, and language. Her life was marked with a love of the out-of-doors, especially the mountains, where she spent much of her adult years skiing, snowshoeing, hiking in the forests, and walking among the wildflowers.

Flo was a member of the Front Range Forum and OSHER (Learning in Retirement), the American Library Association, the Colorado Mountain Club, the Newcomers Alumni Association, Friends of the Library, and the Fort Collins Symphony Guild, and was a contributor to several community organizations. She enjoyed being a CSU Rams women's sports supporter, and had a lifetime affection for baseball, including being a Colorado Rockies fan.

Flo is survived by her daughter Nanette Butler Shannon of Denver, her granddaughter Caitlin Rose Shannon and great granddaughter Lina Engebretson of Chicago, and sister and brother-in-law Mary Kay and Marvin Layman of Tulsa. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law George Shannon (2017). A Celebration of Life will be held at The Lodge at MacKenzie Place (4751 Pleasant Oak Dr, Fort Collins, CO 80525) on Friday August 12, 2022, at noon.
