Galen Craig Stumbough

d. Sep 24, 2025

Galen Craig Stumbough, 81, of Fort Collins, Colorado passed away on September 24, 2025 after a brief battle of bone marrow cancer. He was born on March 30, 1944 in Evanston, Illinois to Harold DeRoy and Virginia (Carter) Stumbough. He graduated from Manitou Springs High School in 1963.

His first summer jobs included guiding tourists up Pike's Peak and being a conductor of the Manitou Cog Rail. His heart belonged in the mountains! After high school and a Europe trip gifted and accompanied by his parents, Craig landed a job as a camera department manager with a large retailer He later worked for High Plains Mechanical, where he became a trusted employee and a lifelong friend to many there. While he worked there, Craig had the opportunity to create his own business and become a sole proprietor, gaining a contract to maintain and clean equipment at cellular tower sites across the region. With that he was able to indulge his love of travel along with the fun of getting into and out of precarious locations. He was a founding member of the Mountaineers, a Larimer County 4-wheel-drive club; he loved getting stuck (and unstuck) in Colorado's backcountry. Some of his favorite moments were with his fellow Mountaineers, especially on adventurous 4x4 trips abroad to Nicaragua and Wales.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Virginia Stumbough; his brother and sister-in-law, John and Elaine Sumbough; and his sister and brother-in-law, Gene Nora and Bob Jessen.

Craig is survived by his five nieces and nephews: Michael Stumbough and wife Darlene of Manor, Texas; Scott Stumbough and wife Karen of Katy, Texas; Kimberly Meeks and husband Clay of Wetumka, Oklahoma; Briana LeClaire and husband Tom of Boise, Idaho; and Taylor Jessen of Burbank, California. He is also survived by eight great nieces and nephews, as well as two great great nieces.

Craig's adventurous spirit and dry wit will be deeply missed by friends, family, and his beloved Mountaineer club. A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for May 2026.
