George Herbert Thomson, 87, died Wednesday, March 1 in Fort Collins, CO.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Dr. Joseph Oscar Thomson and Ruth Craft Thomson. At 6 weeks of age, he traveled with his family to Canton, China, returning to the US in 1940. He attended public schools in Oberlin, OH, Flint, MI, and Stillwater, OK, receiving a B. S. in Chemistry from Oklahoma State University in 1956. Continuing his education, he received a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Chicago and served a postdoctoral fellowship at the U. S. Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology).
He taught for 8 years in the Chemistry Department of General Motors Institute (now Kettering Institute), Flint, MI, before becoming a Senior Engineering Analyst for Phillips Petroleum Company, Bartlesville, OK. After retiring from Phillips, he served for 8 years as Technical Director of one of the Design Institutes of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He then retired a second time, first to Santa Fe, NM and then to Fort Collins, CO. He was active in both the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Seely Thomson, daughter Barbara Thomson, daughter Hilary Thomson, brother-in law Edward Seely, sister-in law Helen Seely Slaughter and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Priscilla Thomson Jackson, sister Marjorie Thomson Saffell, and brother Rev. Alan Craft Thomson.
