Gladys May Thayer, 89, born Gladys May Kattenhorn, of Fort Collins, CO passed away August 19th, 2013 at Pathways Hospice Care in Loveland, CO.
Gladys was born a triplet in London, England on May 31st, 1924. Sadly, neither of her brothers survived. Her mother, Lucy, gave birth to fifteen children, raising nine. Eight daughters and one son. Her father, Albert, died when Gladys was young, leaving Lucy to care for the family. Gladys often spoke fondly of her childhood, saying they were "poor, but proud." The Kattenhorns managed to find the silver lining through many trials, including poverty, diphtheria, sibling deaths and the bombing of London during World War II. Sister Mary, a newly widowed American GI bride, convinced Gladys to return to the States with her.
Once Gladys arrived in Newton Falls, OH, she met and married Herbert Thayer of Hiram in May of 1951. In 1953 the Thayers moved to Geneseo, IL where they had a son, Jeffrey, and a daughter, Jane. In 1961 they settled in Waverly, IA. Besides raising their children, Gladys became a champion bowler, enjoyed painting and drawing, learned to golf and returned to England to visit her beloved family many times. After the passing of her dear husband Herb in 1989, Gladys moved to Ft. Collins, CO in 1991 to be near family. There she thrived, bowling, golfing, taking part in a miniatures club, a "Brits" club, and became close friends with the good people at the Cherry Hill Condos where she lived for over two decades.
Gladys is survived by her children, Jeffrey of Phoenix, AZ and Jane of Laporte, CO, sister Rosa Gill of Canterbury, England, brother Charlie Kattenhorn of Durban, South Africa, daughter-in-law Roxanna May of Phoenix, granddaughters Rylie Thayer and Marla Thayer of Portland, OR, and one granddog, Blue (Laporte, CO). Gladys will be remembered for her British sense of humor, compassion and a competitor to the very end.
