Herbert A Schroeder passed away July 2, 2018 in his Fort Collins home at the age of 88. Herb was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Adele and August Schroeder. He received his BS in Wood Utilization in 1952 and MS in Organic Chemistry in 1954 at the University of Idaho. He served in the Airforce from 1954-1956, as Chief Chemist for rocket propellant analysis. In 1960, he received his DSc in Organic Chemistry at the University of Hamburg in Germany. He worked as a research chemist for the US Forest Products Laboratory from 1961-1963. 1963-1968 he was a professor in Forest Products Chemistry at Oregon State University. Herb then became Professor of Wood Chemistry, in the Department of Forest Sciences at Colorado State University from 1968-1992; then consulted for several companies and international universities. Herb was active in professional organizations along with being a 50 year member of the American Chemical Society. Herb was awarded 5 patents, 7 disclosures of invention, and published in over 30 journals.
Herb married Mary McBride in 1963. He is survived by two sons, Rolf and Kurt, daughter Ingrid, married to Silas Beaner and their two daughters (Fort Collins), along with his brother Rolf (Baton Rouge) and sister Norma Smalley (Cleveland).
