James Herning

James "Jim" Herning, age 86, of Fort Collins, died September 20, 2025 at Poudre Vally Hospital. Jim was born on May 17, 1939, to Anna Herning and Stanford Oscar (Bob) Herning in Menominee, Michigan. He grew up and graduated from Marinette High School in Wisconsin.

He is survived by his wife Susan whom he married on October 7, 1967, daughter Kelly McMurray (Matt Venz), son Adam Herning (Shannon), daughter Kate (Tyler) Coleman, eight grandsons and six great-grandchildren. He was so very proud of all of them.

Jim served in the Army from 1962 to 1968 and served two of those years in Berlin, Germany.

Being part Native American, he is a registered member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin.

Jim retired from CSU facilities maintenance, and he worked for the State of Colorado for 30 years. After retirement he and Sue traveled the world exploring Europe, Alaska and Hawaii with friends. He was passionate about his love of God and family, the Green Bay Packers and his Corvettes. He loved his family above all else on this earth... except maybe the Packers. You could always find him working on unfinished projects around the house, which he'd gladly drop to help others, especially his kids. He spent many years involved with his kids in 4-H, looking forward to his Fall hunting trips, bowling, and Packer games with a PBR in hand.

He will always be loved and greatly missed.
