We are sad to announce the passing of James Kevin Shrum of Fort Collins. He died at age 72 on December 26, 2023. Kevin passed away unexpectedly at home with his family.
Kevin was born in Merced, CA; he move to Denver at 3 years old. After graduating from Cherry Creek High School, he enlisted in the Air Force.
While stationed in Germany, he met his future wife Kathryn Porter. While serving the Air Force in the United States and overseas, his 3 children Douglas, Brian, and Allison were born. Balancing his family and career, he earned double Master's Degrees in Management and Computer Information Systems.
After 24 years of active service as a medical and aeromedical test program administrator, Kevin retired as a Chief Master Sergeant. Moving to Fort Collins, CO, his professional life continued at Regis University instructing graduates in the Master of Science and Organizational Leadership program. He held additional teaching positions at IBMC, Colorado State University and the University of Phoenix.
Following his second retirement, Kevin and Kay moved to their home at the Village Cooperative of Fort Collins. He was involved in many projects at the co-op, both formal and helping friends whenever he could.
Kay and Kevin traveled extensively, cruising to England, Scandinavia, the Balkans, Alaska, the Caribbean, including transiting the Panama Canal multiple times. Trips in the US include several trips to CSU football bowl games, as well as national parks with family. A journey to see the world was always around the corner, and Kevin was happier making and giving memories than objects. After spending Christmas Day with his children and grandchildren, he was excited to prepare for a world cruise starting in January.
Kevin is survived by his wife, 2 sons, daughter and 2 grandchildren as well as his stepmother, 2 brothers, sister, and 6 nieces & nephews. His father, mother and one sister preceded him in death.
As per Kevin's request, no funeral or memorial service will be held at this time.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the United Way of Larimer County or your preferred charity. Sharing with others in need was dear to Kevin's heart.
