Everette L. "Joe" Carter, 86, of Fort Collins passed away May 29, 2010, at Good Samaritan Village, Fort Collins, Colorado. Everette was born Oct 14, 1923 in Hinton, West Virginia, to Walter and Zemma Carter, and was the 8th of 10 children. He received the nickname "Joe" while serving in the Army Air corps during World War II. Under the GI Bill, Joe attended Kansas State and Colorado State University, where he earned his degree in Bacteriology. While at CSU he met Mari Evelyn Sherman and they were married in 1954. Joe loved Colorado and this was the place he called home for the rest of his life. Joe wore many hats in his lifetime including: wrangler at Brynwood Ranch in Estes Park, research and development scientist for Swift Co in Chicago, oil field mud engineer, insurance salesman, CSU Athletic Ticket Director, Hughes Stadium/Moby Gym Manager, Vice President of Commercial Real Estate for Everitt Enterprises, real estate broker and property manager. He was active in the Masons Collins Lodge #19 AF & AM, obtaining 32degree and Knights Templar status. He was also a Jester in El Jebel Shrine. Joe was tender-hearted, warm, endearing, open and gregarious. He was a devoted husband, father, and caretaker. He loved his family, friends, horse Kdeja, nature, animals, and life. He was preceded in death by his parents and 9 siblings. He is survived by his brother Kenneth Carter of Leonardtown MD; his wife of 56 years, Mari; daughters Leslie Carter and Darene (Michael) Hiatt, grandchildren Austin and Aubrey Hiatt of Fort Collins, and his beloved dog 'Artie'. A memorial service with military honors is scheduled for 1:00 pm, Friday, June 4, 2010 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2000 Stover Street in Fort Collins. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or to the Land Protection Fund, Rocky Mountain Nature Association, PO Box 3100, Estes Park, Colorado 80517.
