Joe Hanan

Jan 22, 1931 — Feb 6, 2014

Born in Buffalo, N.Y. to Dr. Ernest B. and Marian Elliott Hanan, Joe was reared in Bolivar, Mo. In 1952, he completed a B.S. in Horticulture at University of Missouri, and then served in the US Marine Corps 1953-1957. He was Honorably Discharged from the Inactive Reserve as a Sergeant in 1961. Joe married Julia Watkins at the home of her parents in Columbia, Mo., in 1956; she survives. He went on to earn his M.S. in Horticulture at Colorado State University in 1959, and his PhD in Floriculture at Cornell University in 1963.

A longtime resident of Ft. Collins, Joe was a member of the Department of Horticulture at CSU from 1963 until his retirement in 1989. As a top researcher and educator in the field of Floriculture, he was the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He was proud of the books he authored, especially Greenhouses: Advanced Technology for Protected Horticulture.

Joe had been fighting a prolonged battle with surgery and complications, and died at Pathways Hospice in Loveland, Colo. His passing leaves a profound ache in the hearts of his wife of 57 years, his sons John (Letty) Hanan, Ernest Hanan, and his faithful dog, Bingo. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Lois Hanan.
