John Howard Brewer signed off from this life to adventure into a new eternity on December 27, 2022. Though he had been in cancer treatment, he passed quickly from heart failure.
Born on May 5, 1949, in Lincoln, Nebraska to Rita and Howard Brewer, John spent some of his early years in Texas and then returned to Nebraska. After growing up in Lexington, he attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln studying History. Shortly after college, he moved to Colorado where he spent the following forty plus years. He worked at Northern Colorado Medical Center in Greeley for twenty years and then was a self-employed Handy Man until he retired.
Johns' laughter brought great joy to all who heard it. He loved nature and spent many hours hiking, riding his bike, and climbing the mountains he loved so much. Earlier in life he climbed many fourteeners (mountains over 14,000 ft. in elevation) and journeyed to Mexico and the southwest to see many ruins. Kind and gentle, he was a man who loved old people and playing his Mandolin. His passion for music and dance brought him together with many wonderful friends. He especially loved to attend live music events and to dance in the great outdoors. Always in the midst of the bluegrass festival scene, he traveled many times to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and attended RockyGrass and the Pagosa Springs festivals as recently as this past Summer and Fall. A history buff with a love for historical fiction, John had more books than one could imagine. He always thought of himself as a mountain man or a man from another time.
John was the oldest of 3 children. He is survived by his sister Rita Kay Woodside and brother Gary Brewer, nephews Luke, Jason, and Galen, niece Tess, and grandnieces Izzy and Keira and grandnephew Declan. He will also be missed by his 3 step children; Ehren Whirty, Niomi Pfohl and Beth Dyer, and their children, as he considered them his own. John's family and extensive circle of friends will remember him with great love and affection, and miss him always. We have lost a true friend and genuinely good person.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, June 10, from 2-6p.m. at Avogadro's Number in Fort Collins. Please join us to share your memories of him and enjoy some of his favorite local musicians.
