John T. Jamison, 97, passed away on Dec. 24, 2024, in Fort Collins, Colo. He had been a resident of Steamboat Springs for 25 years.
John was born on Jan. 16, 1927, in Sterling, Ill., the younger of two sons of William Harrison and Mary Louise (Beckwith) Jamison. Following service in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he attended the University of Wyoming, where he majored in engineering. Upon graduation he was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. until 1975, when he transferred to the GE plant in Salem, VA. He retired from GE in 1987 following 39 years of service.
On October 9, 1953, he married Lucy Coffin in the Unitarian Church in Schenectady. John and Lucy relished traveling the world during their retirement, visiting dozens of countries and forming new friendships wherever they went. The gregarious couple thrived on learning every aspect of a country's history, geography, and culture and loved sharing all they learned with others. They were both voracious readers and, above all else, were lifelong learners. After 60 years of marriage, she died in April 2014.
Well into his later years, John continued to be active in his favorite sports of skiing, pickleball, tennis, and hiking.
Survivors include three sons: Peter (Laura) Jamison of Indianapolis, Ind.; David (Shelly) Jamison of Fort Collins, Colo.; and Steven (companion, Andrea Maroon) Jamison, of Vallejo, Cal. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Michael (Renee) Jamison, Elizabeth (William) Escoffery, Scott (Xiomara) Jamison, Brynna Jamison, and Connor Jamison, along with four great-grandchildren, Teddy, Jenny, Ricky, and Sammi Escoffery. The family extends its appreciation to Jacqueline Ramirez for the loving attention she gave John as his caregiver and friend.
A celebration of life will be held in Rockport, Mass., in the summer. Memorial donations may be made to the Yampa River Botanic Park in Steamboat Springs.
