J. Stephen Mack, 67, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2014 at Pathways Hospice in Loveland, Colorado, surrounded by his family. He died of complications resulting from a stroke.
Steve was born in Portland, Maine on February 25, 1947, the middle of three sons. He moved to Fort Collins in 1965 to attend Colorado State University where he obtained a BS degree in Occupational Therapy. In 1992 he earned his Masters of Healthcare Systems, Health Services Administration at Denver University.
He held and excelled in a number of careers: Assistant Professor and researcher of anatomy and kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario; farmer in Eastern Colorado and Western Kansas; occupational therapist in Fort Collins and partner of Meridian Respiratory Services; hospital Administrator at NCMC in Greeley, managing partner of three Colorado LLCs; home building, remodeling and restoration; real estate developer and investor; and, public watchdog and gadfly at City Council and Planning & Zoning meetings. Steve also had a very special talent in bargain hunting and always kept his family and friends in mind when he stumbled upon a great deal. He was tireless in helping others and his passing is a great loss for the many who love him.
Steve is survived by his wife, Celeste Hammond, his children, Joshua, Sarah and Abigail Mack, his granddaughter, Ayla Gotoh-Mack, his stepson, Drew Kirchner, his stepdaughter, Daron Kirchner and her son, Reilly Merkin, as well as his brothers Richard (Virginia) and James (Lynn) Mack.
An open-house celebration of his life will be held in The Agave Room at The Rio Grande Restaurant on Mountain Avenue in Fort Collins on Sunday, September 14 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The Civic Center Parking Structure on Mason and Laporte Avenue is directly north of the venue. http://www.fcgov.com/parking/pdf/downtownparking.pdf
Please dress casually, the way Steve always did. Feel free to bring the dessert of your choice to share. Despite his often bitter outlook, Steve had an insatiable sweet tooth.
In lieu of flowers a memorial donation may be made to The Special Olympics, Planned Parenthood or Death with Dignity.
