Lana Carlson

Oct 4, 1942 — May 21, 2011

Lana Christina "Chris" Carlson was called home by the Lord on May 21, 2011. She passed away at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Lana was born October 4, 1942 in Chicago, Ill to Nils and Hulda Pearson. Lana worked at Poudre Valley Hospital for more than 25 years, most recently as Manager of Medical Records. A graduate of Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor's degree in Education, Lana taught elementary school in the Chicago suburbs after college. After moving with her family to Fort Collins in 1984, she taught Head Start, and was a substitute teacher for the Poudre R-1 school district. She had a special place in her heart for the most needy in her community, and enjoyed working in Special Education. She began working nights at Poudre Valley Hospital's switchboard before returning to college. Always one to reinvent herself when necessary, Lana returned to school at Regis University and earned a certificate in health information management. Lana was a very active participant in the community. She was a faithful Christian and long-time member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. She served on the Alter Guild and Stephen Ministry, and previously served on the Church Council. She also participated in a craft circle with members of the church. Lana volunteered with PVH by knitting hats for the newborn babies at the hospital. She was an avid reader and met with her Book Club for years, always recommending her favorite books to others. Lana, the daughter of Swedish immigrants, met regularly with a local Swedish women's group who convened to speak Swedish and talk about the "Old Country." She especially enjoyed Swedish Christmas celebrations with friends, family, and traditional food. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Lana is survived by her sons Bo and Leif, her daughter Britt, their families including 3 grandchildren, and her friend Don, all of whom live in Colorado. Lana was preceded in death by her father Nils, her mother Hulda and her brother Phillip. Lana is remembered as a tremendously caring person, who always put the needs of others before her own. She was a gentle, tender person, who faced overwhelming adversity with a sense of dignity and elegance. A memorial celebration will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, located at 2000 S. Lemay Avenue, at 11:00 a.m. on June 24th. All those who knew Lana are welcome and encouraged to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
