Lila Younghans Armstead, age 101, of Fort Collins, CO formally of Greeneville, Tennessee, died January 5, 2008 at Spring Creek Health Care Center. Lila was born on February 5, 1906 in Rensselaer County, NY, to Madison and Emma (Uline) Younghans. While growing up, Lila was educated in small, rural, schoolhouse until her father moved the family to a farm in Troy, NY. After completing high school, Lila attended Russell Sage College (a small school for girls) in Troy, NY to study nursing. She graduated after earning a BSRN degree. Lila met Jim Armstead in Troy, NY where he was also attending school. The two were married on October 3, 1931, and were together 71 years until Jim's death on March of 2003. Lila worked as a nurse until she and Jim started a family. They had two sons, James Jr. and Stephen. Lila also opened her home to three other young men while they went to school. The couple later moved to Greeneville, TN. In 1971, when Jim retired, the two bought a trailer did a lot of traveling. After 12 years and a close call accident they called it quits for the travels. In 1994, after deteriorating health, Lila and Jim moved to Fort Collins to be closer their son Stephen, and his family. Lila was very active in church activities throughout the healthier part of her life. She was an avid bridge player, volunteered for the red cross, local blood banks in the towns where she lived, and was active in local youth programs such as 'Youth Builders' in Greeneville, TN and the 'Troy Boys Club' in Troy, NY. Lila was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years; James Armstead, a brother; and two sisters. Cremation will be conducted, and a memorial service will be held privately. Lila and Jim will be buried together at the Oakgrove Cemetery in Westhaven, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.
