Marguerite Anne Notess

On Friday, October 7, 2022, Marguerite Anne "Margie" Notess, passed away at Seven Lakes Memory Care in Loveland CO. Born September 14, 1932 to George Kearney and Marguerite Hellwege in Union City NJ, she was an only child; her father died when she was six years old. A voracious learner, Margie earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Buffalo State Teacher's College and taught elementary school in Buffalo NY and Seattle WA. In 1970 Margie married Charles "Charlie" Notess in Buffalo NY whom she met through folk dancing and became another mother to his three sons, Peter, Mark and Greg. In 1973 the family moved to Blacksburg VA. In 1975 Margie and Charlie relocated to South Carolina, then to Colorado when Charlie retired, to be near Peter and Mark and their families.

After she left the public school arena, Margie continued teaching at community recreation centers in South Carolina and the Northern Colorado area subjects she was passionate about, such as Ireland, Native Americans, American artist Emily Carr, and women in history. Margie delighted to learn many crafting techniques, producing fine examples and teaching others to do likewise: quilting, knitting, beading, embroidery, water color painting, china painting, cross stitch. She loved to utilize her skills to make gifts for others and to donate to Christmas craft bazaars.

Beginning as a young woman adventurously traveling alone and later with Charlie, Margie visited Honduras, Peru, Costa Rica, Columbia, Portugal, France, Spain, Switzerland, England, and Ireland. She loved cats, her canine companion Lupe, hiking, cooking, gardening, reading mysteries, watching westerns, offering advice, mocha almond ice cream, the color purple, and listening to Bee Gees songs.

Margie had a marvelous sense of humor, fierce determination, and tenacious independence. She is survived by her step-sons Peter (Martha) Notess and Greg (Cecelia) Notess and daughter-in-law Liz Notess, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her husband Charles Notess and step-son Mark Notess preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 10:00 the Oak Room at the Chilson Center in Loveland, CO.
