Michael Scobey

Beloved brother, husband, father, uncle, stepfather, grandfather, and step-grandfather, Mike Scobey, left us on May 26, 2021 at the age of 80. Born April 13, 1941, in Mattoon, IL to Dorothy and Ellis Scobey, he also spent part of his early childhood in Indianapolis, IN before the family moved to Midland, TX during World War II.

In Midland he was an accomplished high school basketball player as well as a sprinter/quarter-miler on the track team. He carried his talents on to Cornell College in Iowa where he played on a conference championship football team as well as continuing with track and field. He later did some graduate work at Mankato State University in Minnesota. He spent a number of years teaching and coaching including a year at a one-room schoolhouse in rural Nebraska. He also worked at other jobs along the way including working as a Brakeman in the caboose of a freight train on the Chicago North Western railroad running from the twin cities to Altoona, WI and back. In the late 70s he became a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Fort Collins, which he did until he retired. He enjoyed delivering mail as it allowed him to be active and out and about around town; he especially liked the years he spent on "walking" routes.

Mike enjoyed investing, reading, going to movies, and watching sports and movies on TV, but he enjoyed nothing more than helping out his kids and grandkids in any way he could. He loved watching their sports and artistic performances and making sure they had running cars and good tools. His routine involved picking up his granddaughters from school, as well as driving down to Denver on weekends to spend time with his son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons.

He was predeceased by his twin sister Margaret Scobey Putnam and brother-in-law Melvin Hunn, and is survived by older brother John Ellis Scobey, younger sister R. June Scobey and her partner Kevin Clark, wife Mary Lee Scobey, daughter Sarah Elizabeth Scobey, son John Nelson Scobey, son-in-law Chad Dalrymple, daughter-in-law Jennifer Scobey, grandchildren Rhowen Dalrymple, Derryth Dalrymple, Carson Scobey, Rena Dalrymple, and Jake Scobey, niece Justine Vanthilt, nephews Christian Putnam and Clay Hunn, step-daughter Nicole Fortney, and step-grandchildren Kage Fortney and Serene Fortney.
