Mildred Wolford Johnson, age 87, of Fort Collins, died on August 27, 2009 at her home. She will be laid to rest, privately, with her husband, Bill, at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 12th at First United Methodist Church, 1005 Stover St., Ft. Collins. Mildred Wolford was born on May 27, 1922 in Shanks, West Virginia to Elmer and Rosa (Collins) Wolford. She grew up on a farm outside of Romney, WV and attended Capital City School of Nursing at Gallinger Municipal Hospital in Washington, DC. She married William "Bill" Johnson on November 16, 1946 in Washington. Mildred dedicated her life to nursing, working as a nurse epidemiologist at Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC from 1960 until 1984. She is a founding member and served as president for the Washington DC Metropolitan area APIC (Association of Practitioners in Infection Control and Epidemiology). In 1987 she and Bill moved to Fort Collins from Harpers Ferry, WV, but continued their nationwide trailer travel, a love of theirs for many years, as members of the Good Sam Club. Mildred was a longtime member of the Fort Collins Newcomers Club. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and was one of the "crafty ladies" of Shannondale. Mildred was a staunch supporter of Elderhaus Adult Day Programs and of the American Cancer Society. She was a pro-active supporter of women's equality issues and was a career minded woman long before it became in vogue. Mildred enjoyed gardening and nature and was a dedicated life-long caregiver, not only in her profession, but at home as well as a busy volunteer throughout her life. Mildred is survived by her son, Jerry Johnson, of Tucson, AZ; her daughters, Marie Mohn and Patty (and Michael) Nekonchuk all of Fort Collins; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Guy Wolford of Winchester, VA; her sisters, Blanche Cartwright Hahn of Sun City Center, FL and Thelma Stokes of Winchester, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and her sister, Hazel Mae Wolford.
