Born in Elgin Illinois to Walter J. and Mamie L. Hoffman, Neil
graduated from Elgin High school and attended Elgin Community
College. He enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean
War and as an Aviation Third Class Petty Officer was discharged
from active duty in March of 1956. He married Ann Estell Connell
April 2, 1955 during his last year in the navy. The couple resided
first at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, later at Champaign,
Illinois, Decatur, Illinois, Broomfield, Colorado and Cincinnati,
Ohio. Neil retired from the General Electric Company, Evendale,
Ohio at the close of 1992. He was with the GE Jet Engine
Division and traveled worldwide for the company auditing and
teaching. During retirement, he and Ann lived in Ouray, Colorado
where Neil drove jeep tours in the San Juan Mountains. Neil is
survived by his wife, Ann, and three children; Debra Jones, David
Hoffman and Mark Hoffman. He was preceded in death by his
oldest daughter Cheri Calvin and granddaughter Chandra Smith.
Neil leaves seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren to
carry forward his positive attitude. He will be buried at Cedar Hill
Cemetery just north of Ouray, Colorado. For those so inspired,
donations in Niel's honor may be made to the PBY Museum,
Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Washington, or to the Boy
Scouts of America.
