Robert Herron Wood Sr., 76, of Fort Collins, died Dec. 18, 2015, in Fort Collins. Bob was born July 24, 1939, in New Albany, Miss., to Herron and Clora Wood. He lived many years in Cordele, Ga., before graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1963.
Bob was an officer in the United States Army for 28 years, serving twice in Vietnam. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in Vietnam. During his career, he served with both the 101st and 82nd airborne divisions.
Bob retired from the Army at the rank of Colonel in 1991, moving with his wife to Colorado. He taught math at Highland High School in Ault for five years. He lived in Fort Collins for 24 years.
He earned a masters degree in operations research from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, and a teaching degree from Northern Colorado University in Greeley.
Bob enjoyed gardening, classical music and reading, especially military history. He was a hiker, and hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, a Past Grand Knight of Council 1214 and a Past Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Assembly #279 Fort Collins.
Bob and his wife Kathleen were married Dec. 28, 1963, in Binghamton, N.Y. They shared a lifetime of love.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert H. Wood Jr., and a daughter, Elizabeth K. Wood.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (McFarland) Wood, Fort Collins; daughter Suzanne (Mike) Koziatek, Belleville, Ill.; daughter-in-law Charlotte Wood, Grand Forks, N.D.; brothers William (Arlene) Wood, Hull, Ga., and Michael (Nancy) Wood, Conyers, Ga.; sister Frances (Darrell) Youngblood, Stockbridge , Ga.; grandsons Nicholas (Brittany) Wood, Alexandria, Va., William Wood and Benjamin Wood, Grand Forks, and Michael Koziatek, Belleville; granddaughter, Julia Koziatek, Belleville.
A visitation and recitation of the Rosary will be held at 6:00 PM Tuesday, Dec. 22nd at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 300 West Mountain Ave., Ft. Collins. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Wednesday, Dec. 23rd at St. Joseph's. Interment, follows the Mass at Roselawn Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall afterwards.
