Virgil was born in Graham County, Kansas on a farm 12 miles NE of Hill City, Kansas on February 22, 1929. His parents, Frank and Opal were farmers at that time, and he attended county schools through the 5th grade. His folks quit farming and moved to Norton, Kansas, where his father began blacksmithing, welding & mechanical work. He grew up with his four brothers, Alvin, Cecil, Boyd and DeWayne and two sisters, Laverne & Helen.
Virgil worked for the County Highway Department part-time during his final school years, and full-time, two years before he was drafted into the army on January 3, 1950. His Basic Training was at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; 2nd Armor Division. He was shipped over seas in July 1950 to Baumholder, Germany, where he spent the next fourteen months. Before being shipped home, he spent three months in the 103 Engineering, and then was discharged in Breckinridge, Kentucky, November 26, 1952.
When Virgil returned home, he married his fiance', Donna Y. Ray on December 18, 1952. They had 2 children, daughter, Cynthia Lynn and son, Kerry Kim. Donna passed away from cancer June 5, 1986, after 34 years of marriage.
Two years later Virgil met Mildred R. Parker and they were married on October 29, 1988; they were married 27 years. Virgil worked for Poppe Construction for eight years and for Purtzer & Dutton, six years in Norton, Kansas. The family moved to Colorado in 1966. He began working for Flatiron Paving, April 1, 1966; staying with the company for 26 ½ years. He then worked for Don Kehn and the Fort Collins Street Department before retiring at age 76.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Mildred, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Memorial Service is scheduled for 3:00 PM, Saturday, March 12th, Life Church off East Prospect on 1501 Academy Court.
